The God Who Comforts Like a Mother

As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you. And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem – Isaiah 66:13

1) How can you liken God to a mother?
2) What is God’s comfort to mankind?

Some years ago I read a book titled The Shark, which was later adapted into a movie, I was thrilled to see the author depict God as a woman; comforting, guiding, parenting a man whose daughter was kidnapped and later found dead.

We all know the love of a mother towards her children is nothing that can be compared to, it’s real, pure, deep, and unconditional. A flashback to when you were younger, can you remember an outstanding experience with your mum? When you were happy, sick, sad, celebrating your birthday, going to college, graduating, getting married, fearful, or depressed. Now take those memories and picture God as a mother guiding, helping, comforting, and listening to your spoken and unspoken words.

We will use this imagination to elaborate and understand this topic, kindly follow along.

1) How can you liken God to a mother?

Already we know there are distinct qualities between a mother and a father, and we know, as the bible in many passages as shown God as a father, how then can a dad comfort, understand, love, and share the feelings that only a mum can with her children?

We know one of our heavenly Father’s nature is love, God is love.
He who does not love does not know God, for God is Love. We love him because he first loved us – 1st John 4:8 &19

We know God is the source of love because he sent his only son to die for us – see John 3:16.

…. yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love – Jeremiah 31:3

The love he showed sending his only begotten son to die for us, made us his children and co-heirs with Christ. An act representing the deepest love mankind can ever imagine, this shows how God loves like a mother and even deeper than a mother as he willingly sacrificed his beloved and only son for a world that does not love or know him. Comparing this to a mum, how deep can a mum love that she can sacrifice one of her children or her only child?

“Can a woman forget her nursing child,
And not have compassion on the son of her womb?
Surely they may forget,
Yet I will not forget you.
See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands;
Your walls are continually before Me. – Isaiah 49:15-16

He who made you can never forget and not have compassion on you, his love brings us comfort whenever we face trials, temptation, and pressures of the world.

In today’s study, we looked at likening God to a mother, next week we will look at another nature of God (compassion) and answer, what is God’s comfort to mankind?

Till next week, Happy Study!
